Is SmartKeyboard free?
Yes — SmartKeyboard is free to download and use with Apple Intelligence, which runs entirely on-device. Optional cloud engines (OpenAI and Google Gemini) use your own API keys, so you only ever pay your provider directly.
Can the keyboard see everything I type?
No. SmartKeyboard only acts on text you explicitly select and send for a transformation. Apple Intelligence processes that text on-device; a cloud request is made only when you choose a cloud model. Full Access is requested solely so the cloud engines can reach the network.
Which apps does it work in?
Any app with a text field — Messages, Mail, Notes, Slack, Safari, and more. As a system keyboard, SmartKeyboard works everywhere you type on iOS, with no app-switching or copy-paste.
Which AI models are supported?
Three engines: Apple Intelligence (on-device, private, no key needed), OpenAI GPT-4o, and Google Gemini. Pick the best model for each task in Settings.
Do I need an API key?
Only for the cloud engines. Apple Intelligence works out of the box with no key and no account. Add an OpenAI or Gemini key only if you want to use those models.
